Because estimates of imports and exports of services are only available annually, it is not possible to make a definitive assessment of the position of invisible trade in
the first quarter. Nevertheless, in two areas there are
useful indications. First, comparing the first quarter of 1983 with the first quarter of 1982, the number of visitors coming to Hong Kong increased by 4%, which was slightly higher
than the increase of 3% in the number of Hong Kong residents
touring abroad (including Macau and China). There was, thus,
likely to be little change in the net surplus on expenditure
on travel in the first quarter.
Second, as the growth
growth of
cargo movements continued, the net surplus on expenditure on
shipping and air transportation services may well have
increased.
