The major end-use categories of goods re-exported

through Hong Kong were consumer goods, and raw materials and semi-manufactures, representing 428 and 37% respectively of the total value of re-exports. On the basis of trade indexes

available up to May, re-exports of consumer goods

goods grew by about 12% in real terms while re-exports of raw materials and

semi-manufactures increased by about 1% in real terms in the

first half of 1983, compared with the first half of 1982.

China remained also the most important source of

goods re-exported through Hong Kong. The value of re-exports from this source grew by 21% compared with the first half of 1982, and accounted for 35% of the total value of re-exports
