The total number of visitors coming to Hong Kong in
the first quarter, at 596 109, was 4% higher than in the same
period last year. At the end of March 1983, there were 17 415 hotel rooms in Hong Kong compared with 16 437 a year ago. The
average hotel occupancy rate in the first quarter was
768, somewhat lower than in the corresponding quarter of 1982.

Continuing the recent trend, the number of passenger journeys on the Mass Transit Railway increased by while those on ferries decreased by 17% in the first quarter of 1983, compared with the same period a year earlier. There were no other significant developments in the public transport sector. For private transport, the number of newly registered private cars showed a significant drop, from 9 803 in the first quarter of 1982 to 3 069 in the third quarter and then to 1 474 in the first quarter of 1983. This was mainly due to the slowdown in economic growth and to the tax increases introduced in May 1982 and in February 1983. The total number of private cars registered at

less than that at the end of March 1982.

This increase was largely attributable to the opening of the Tsuen Wan Extension of the Mass Transit Railway in May 1982.
