Manufacturing employment in December 1982 at 847 200
was 6% lower than in December 1981, and the number of
vacancies also declined significantly, by 46%. Compared with
September 1982, there were decreases of 1% in manufacturing
employment and of 20% in the number of manufacturing vacancies.

Within the tertiary services sectors, employment in
the finance, insurance, real estate and business services
sector continued to expand, albeit at a slower rate.
166 100 in December 1982, employment in this sector was 78 higher than in December 1981. Employment both in restaurants
and hotels and in the wholesale, retail and import/export trades also increased by 7%. Over the same period, employment in the civil service grew by 10%.

Employment on building and construction (including
civil engineering) sites declined by 8% for 1982 as a whole,
although there was a small increase of 1% during the three
months ending December 1982. The decrease was concentrated on
private building
building sites, where employment dropped by 19%; employment on public building sites rose slightly, by 1%.
Employment on civil engineering sites, however, continued to
increase rapidly, by 16%. This increase was mainly
attributable to the construction of the MTR Island Line.
