factory visits and contacts with local

industrialists, some qualitative assessment of the present

state of manufacturing industry can be made. First,

manufacturers in general remained confident and optimistic

about export prospects in the coming months. Second, the

pace of improvement appears to vary from industry to

industry.

The performance of the largest sector, (3) textiles

and clothing, continued to improve. The boom in the electronics industry, particularly in computer

and related products and telecommunication equipment,

benefitted other related industries such as plastics,

metal working, electrical machinery and appliances. Third, some manufacturers of plastic products, electronic

products and electrical appliances reported continuing

difficulties in obtaining raw materials and component parts in the third quarter due to supply shortages as well

as the volatile exchange rate situation.
