9. The Governor of Hong Kong made clear in his speech to the Legislative Council on 5 October that the Hong Kong Government, intend to continue to invest vigorously in Hong Kong's future. They have recently taken measures to stabilise the Hong Kong dollar and the local Stock Market and currency are both responding well. Majesty's Government have every confidence in the judgement of the Governor and of his advisers in taking these useful and constructive
measures.

10. In our discussions with the People's Republic of China on the future of Hong Kong we aim to build on the effective partnership which has linked Britain, Hong Kong and China for so long. That cooperation has produced a unique and flourishing society, where economic and technical skills can thrive within a responsible and pragmatic political and social framework. Hong Kong people and their economy need confidence, and that in turn requires assurance that they can look forward to continuity of their way of life in every essential aspect. We shall support them in that.
I am confident that we shall continue to build on the interests which we share with China to achieve a settlement which will ensure a future to which Hong Kong people can look forward with confidence.
