SIR ROBIN DAY
PADDY ASHDOWN M.P.
problem, if we are going to do it
properly, it is going to have to be done
on the basis of reasonable negotiations conducted if at all possible in a
ཀ་
confidential manner.
But you say this, my impression was
that we aren't being told hardly
anything about the negotiations and cards are being played very close to everybody's chest.
I think certain of the Prime Minister's
statements, I think it was about a month
ago, certainly those ones which set in
train a run on the Hong Kong stock
exchange is very damaging to the
confidence of Hong Kong and very possibly to the stability and peace of the colony
as well.

I wish some of the things that have been said about Hong Kong had been said about
the Falklands because I think it is
important that we do negotiate seriously
over Hong Kong, something which we
apparently never did over the Falklands and I think that if people want to go elsewhere then they should be given the opportunity to leave and go elsewhere if they so please. The Falklands as George Walden said is ours but at what a price and I am not prepared to pay that price for Hong Kong.
