Thank you for your letter of 19 December on behalf of your constituent Mr David King come, about the future of Hong Kong.

Mr Kingcome can be assured that our negotiations with China are continuing on the basis of the agreed common aim of maintaining Hong Kong's stability and prosperity. This aim, coupled with our good relations with China, gives grounds for confidence that a satisfactory solution, acceptable not only to the British and Chinese governments, but also to the people of Hong Kong, can be reached. Recent rounds of talks have been described by both sides as useful and constructive. The next round is due to take place on 25/26 January.

I am returning your constituent's letter.
