It is further agreed that these moneys shall be
paid into the hands of any officer whom Her Britannic
Majesty's Representative shall specially appoint to
receive them, and that the accuracy of the amounts
shall, before payment, be duly ascertained by British and Chinese officers appointed to discharge this duty. In order to prevent fature discussion, it is more- over declared, that of the Fight Millions of Tacls herein guaranteel, T'wo Millions will be appropriated to the indemnification of the British Mercantile com- munity at Canton for losses sustained by then, and the remaining Six Millious to the liquidation of war
cxpcuses.
ARTICLE IV.
Jt is agreed that on the day ou which this Con- vention is signed, flis perial Majesty the Emperor of China shall open the port of Tientsin to frady, and that it shall be thereafter competent to British sube, jects to reside, and trade, there under the same con- ditions as at any other port of China by Treaty open to trade.

ARTICLE V.
As Loon as the Ratifications of the Treaty of one thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight shall have
becu exchanged, His Huperial Majesty the Emperor of China, will, by decree, tutuand the high authorities of every province to proclain throughout their juris- dictions, that Ciduese, chasing to tule serving la the British Colonies or other parts beyond sen, are ut perfect liberty to enter into engagements with Iritish Subjects for that purpose, and to ship themselves and their families on board any British versel at any of the open ports of China. Also that the high authorities aforemaid, shall, in eunort with Her Britannie Majesty's Representative in Chite, frame such regulations for the protection of Chinese emigrating as above, as the circumstances of the different open ports uny demand,
