4. Both sides hope for further high-level visits in the near future: following King Juan Carlos' 1978 visit to China, protocol requires President Liu Xianin to visit Spain (no date has been fixed yet) before Felipe González can visit Peking.

A cultural cooperation agreement was signed during the visit: contrary to Spanish press reports this did not represent any new initiative but was merely drafted within the agreement signed during the King's 1978 visit. Wang Zhen told me that the MFA here had been most keen before the visit to ensure that something positive should be seen to come of it.
