PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES

GENERAL BRIEF: UNITED STATES.

Brief by Foreign & Commonwealth Office

INTRODUCTION

1. The Prime Minister will spend a day and a half in

Washington. She is due to arrive on the afternoon of 28

September and will attend a dinner at the Ambassador's

Residence that evening for leading US bankers,

businessmen and some Congressional figures. On 29

September she will have a breakfast meeting with members

of the Senate followed by calls on Mr Volcker, Chairman

of the Federal Reserve and Mr Regan, Secretary to the

Treasury. Her main engagement of the day will be a têtê

à têtê session of about one hour with President Reagan.

starting at 11.30 and continuing with a working lunch

which other senior members of the US Administration and

Sir G Howe will attend. In the afternoon, Mrs Thatcher

will call on the Vice-President and in the evening

receive the Churchill Foundation Award at a dinner at the
