MR HAYDEN'S VISIT TO PEKING: PRESS RELEASE

37)

(238)

1. On my return from/leave I have read with interest Peking tels numbers 777 and 778, the latter of which in paragraph 4 remarks that "there is not much point in briefing the Australians further".

No

2. The two telegrams have otherwise been carefully drafted. This heavy comment is conspicuous and attracts attention. doubt it reflects a good deal of irritation with Mr Hayden. But the comment itself is a non sequitur and one might, with more logic, conclude paragraph 4 with the statement that there is a need for deeper briefing of the Australians.

3. I understand that you have already commented and that there is a new worry arising from an interview given by Sir Antony Parsons. Mr Whitney will not be seeing Mr Hayden in Australia in early October, because the latter will be at the UN, but he will need to be carefully briefed on the Hong Kong question.
