FUTURE OF HONG KONG: REMARKS BY DR MAHATHIR

TO THE PRIME MINISTER

1/AF 25/31

23/3

1. The attached article from the Hong Kong Standard refers to remarks on Hong Kong's future apparently made by Dr Mahathir to the Prime Minister during his recent visit.

2.

I understand from SEAD that there is no mention in the records of any discussion on Hong Kong. It is possible of course that the subject came up during a meal.

3. We should be grateful if you could find out from Mr Coles at No.10 what, if anything, was said about Hong Kong. It is quite possible that Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur will ask us. You will see that the writer of the article, Ray Hearn, refers to 'Downing Street sources' in his third paragraph.
