FUTURE OF HONG KONG AND THE AUSTRALIANS

1.

Just to record that Mr White, Assistant in SPD, is

now in the picture. I told him on 24 March about the

Australians getting intelligence material from us and showed

him relevant papers thereon, including our latest exchange

with Sir A Duff.

2.

I also showed him our exchange with Canberra over

Zhao's visit.

3.

Mr White was glad to know the score but is happy to

leave things to us. If there are any significant developments

he would appreciate being informed.

4.

I agreed that in due course we would acknowledge

Mr Cullimore's letter of 17 March, which is now largely

overtaken.

He mentioned in passing that Mr Hawke may be in London

in June.
