validity. Even if the Chinese were to take such action, we should still have to continue talking to them.

5. I was left with the impression that Klintworth and Irvine had a fair idea where we stood on negotiations though they were careful not to press too hard in sensitive areas. I was however concerned to avoid turning this meeting into a Hong Kong session and we in fact spent a lot more time discussing such matters as the Sino-US relationship. Irvine made some interesting points on this topic which I am recording separately.
