On 15 March Mr Giordano of the Italian Embassy called on the same subject. He had seen Mr McQuade a couple of months ago. Our conversation was fairly similar to the above but on a more superficial level. However,

Mr Giordano's previous post was Hong Kong and he only left there in December 1982. He was therefore very well informed on the Chinese propaganda campaign, business confidence, and the way Hong Kong works. He made it quite clear that he thought little of Chinese guarantees and assurances of non-interference should Hong Kong become a SAR.
