The same contact told me that an Atlantic Council study group is about to visit Peking to look at Sino/US relations under the leadership of Alexis Johnson, who is a former US Ambassador and now an elder statesman in the East Asia academic field. His contacts in Peking are likely to be primarily with academics, but may include the Foreign Ministry.

They are visiting Hong Kong, unfortunately after Peking. I shall come back to you when I have further details, but on the face of it, it would appear worthwhile our offering them some briefing. There is also the possibility that a largish group from the Senate may go to Peking some time towards the end of March. when we can get more details.
