a report in the Luxemburger Wort in Luxembourg that Luxembourg Jewellery Manufacturers, a subsidiary of Foo Hang Jewellery of Hong Kong wants to build a 1000 sq. metre factory and offices in Luxembourg to manufacture, process and trade in precious metals, jewellery, clocks and watches, precious stones and gold. The total- investment is 40 million francs. 20 jobs will be created initially and 60 later.

German regional (the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung) that the Germany Federal Health Office has issued a warning against certain products from India, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong items are Chuifong Toukuwan, Ginseng Hui Sheng and Tsai Tsao Wan. Though advertised as herbal or homaeopathic, these items often contain undeclared, potent and not undangerous pharmaceuticals. There is also a warning against "Chinese" tiger-bone tincture with no indication of the source.

contradictory articles within two days of each other in the Italian maritime transport daily, the Avvisatore Marittimo, one headlined "Difficulties for the port of Hong Kong: Chinese proximity holding back development: container traffic growing fast... but forthcoming handover of territory to China (1999) (sic!) preoccupying potential investors" and the other stating that "Traffic with Southeast Asia flooding into Hong Kong and Singapore: both ports benefit from exceptional geography..

Hong Kong, Italy and Greece were the only three potential sources of counterfeit goods mentioned in a full page article in Zentralmarkt, a magazine appearing in Würtzburg, Germany. Hong Kong was singled out as a source of highly professional counterfeit watches.
