hongkong press exposes hypocrisy of british authorities' "popular feeling" polL

hongkong, september 16 cxinhua) -- a number of newspapers and magazines here have recently carried' articles exposing the hypocrisy of the "popular feeling" poll staged by the british authorities in hongkong over the future of this area.

the poll has so far elicited from two or three Local papers such statements as "separation of sovereignty and power of administration "administration of hongkong by local people won't work, and "hongkong won't maintain its prosperity without british participation in the administration."

commenting on this spate of "polled opinion,' "tin tin yat pac" says editorially that the british authorities' sudden interest in hongkong's "popular feeling" shows that they try to use it as a "trump card" in their negotiations with china. but the most important popular feeling the british authorities should respect is the national feelings of the chinese in hongkong.

the latest issue of the monthly, 'wide angle says in an article that popular polls and investigations conducted by scholastic institutions in hongkong show that two-thirds of the hongkong inhabitants polled favor the proposal for "administration of hongkong by Local people" and the percentage is still rising. everyone knows the british governor and the executive and Legislative councils of hongkong represent only the interest of the british government, the magazine says.

the "central daily news" of hongkong editorializes that sovereignty and power of administration cannot be separated. if the power of administration of hongkong remains in the hands of british, it would be impossible for china to recover its sovereignty over the area. and there is no such a sovereign country in the world whose power of administration is in the hands of foreigners, the editorial says.

many other newspapers and magazines also list facts to show that the hongkong authorities have Long neglected the popular feeling of hongkong inhabitants. the "popular feeling trump card" played by the hongkong authorities is but a futile attempt, an article in "tin tin yat pao" says. it would not help the british authorities, the article adds. end item
