FUTURE OF HONG KONG: CHINESE PRESS COVERAGE: LEGAL SITUATION

1. Peking telnos 913 and 914 reported the People's Daily commentary arguing that China's recovery of sovereignty would be in accordance with international law. This argument was repeated in this morning's China Daily. The English language version of the Chinese position which is enclosed may be of interest. I need hardly add that we were most grateful for the legal comments contained in FCO telno 628 and Hong Kong telno 539.
