I attach an updated list of the main files in use on the future of Hong Kong. Those of us not yet familiar with all the reference numbers should do our best to memorise them as soon as possible and where folios are to be put away on files, to indicate on the folio which file it should go on!

I should be grateful for thoughts by the end of the month on new file titles for 1984. I don't want us to be swamped with files but there are certainly some existing ones which could be split up.

The following occurred to me..

(i) We could split up Hong Kong and third countries into:

Hong Kong and the US

Hong Kong and the EC

Hong Kong and the Commonwealth

Hong Kong and Japan

Hong Kong and elsewhere

(ii) Letters from the public: this could be divided into the

following:

Hong Kong UK

elswere

(iii) Press reports: this could be split with files:

(iv)

(v)

Hong Kong

UK

elsewhere

Speeches and interviews could be extended to include conferences and seminars.

A new file should be added entitled 'Opinion Polls'.
