1. The Secretary of State would like to read the first two articles (copies attached) in this edition of the ''China Quarterly'' in advance of the meeting on Hong Kong with the Prime Minister on Monday 5 September. We have been asked whether we have any views to express on them.

2. May I please have (in the form of minutes to us) your comments on Mr Dicks' article about some legal aspects of the status of Hong Kong (Mr Burrows) and Mr Pye's on the international position of Hong Kong (Mr Walker) by lunchtime tomorrow? I apologise for the short notice; the Secretary of State's copy of the September ''China Quarterly'' is the first that we have seen.
