VISIT TO CHINA BY LORD RHODES:

1.

OCTOBER 1983

Mr Luce has seen PS/Lady Young's minute of 31 August on this subject. He has also received the attached letter from Lord Rhodes giving details of his party and asking for briefing.

2. Mr Luce would be grateful if you would get in touch with Lord Rhodes by telephone to offer him, and Lady Llewelyn-Davies, any briefing they might require. Mr Luce suggests that this might be combined with a short call on Lady Young. I would be grateful if you could coordinate timings.

3. There is, of course, an unfortunate complication that we are in the process of attempting to disuade Mr Goodlad and Mr Renton from joining the party. They are both still away, and it might therefore be better if you said nothing on this point to Lord Rhodes.
