5. I emphasised, in particular, the importance of his (Lord Rhodes) not doing anything which might lead the Chinese to misunderstand his efforts as being part of the British side of the negotiations. Lord Rhodes was reminded that their visit to China would follow fairly closely the talks in Peking of 22/23 September.

6. I have told Dick Clift briefly of the above, and am copying this letter to him.
