Note on Lunch with Lord Rhodes
Thursday 25 August 1983
You know the background to Lord Rhodes' request for me to give him lunch at Cowley Street: Lord Rhodes brought with him Baroness Llewelyn-Davies and Miss Frances Wood, who are both members of his team visiting China Helen YU was also present.
2. Initially, Lord Rhodes' conversation consisted almost entirely of old-time tales and reminiscences. Then, he launched into plans for his visit. It became clear through his dialogue with Baroness Llewelyn-Davies and Miss Wood that they have yet to crystallise their plans.
3. Much of the exchange during lunch was repetitious and taken up considerably by Lord Rhodes' concern over accommodation in Hong Kong, but a number of points were established :
(a)
the team may be four or five, the fifth being as yet un-named: the four confirmed members are Lord Rhodes, Pat Llewelyn-Davies, Alastair Goodlad and Frances Wood. (After lunch Lord Rhodes indicated that the fifth might be Tim Renton, Conservative MP, but this is not yet certain):
(b) they intend to stay at the Peninsula Hotel, but would be seeking Lord Kadoorie's advice and assitance first;
