Lord Rhodes

Yesterday Lawrence and Muriel Kadoorie invited Peggy

and me to lunch: Lord (Hervey) Rhodes was also present.

Much of the lunch time was spent in personal/family chitchat but Lord Rhodes raised two matters which will be of interest to you.

Firstly, Lord Rhodes said that he had been busy putting together a small group to go to China in the Autumn: that the Foreign Office (a reference to a conversation with Richard Luce) was keen that he should go to China he claimed he had Mr. Luce's "full backing" and that Mr. Luce fully appreciated the fact that the

Chinese would like to receive and listen to "mature" people like Lord Rhodes and his group.

Lord Rhodes said that the Chinese Ambassador here in London had issued the invitation some time ago and that he

(Lord Rhodes) in particular, but also the Foreign Office, thought it would be wrong for him to turn the invitation down. On this occasion he proposed that the group should number four :

Lord Rhodes

Lady Llewelyn-Davies (Labour Chief Whip in the House of Lords and presently Chairman of the Select Committee on EEC)

Alastair Goodlad (Conservative MP for Eddisbury) Frances Wood (A "China expert" from the British

Museum)

(for ease of reference, I attach extracts from Who's Who).

L.M. Davies, CMG, OBE, JP,

Secretary (General Duties), Government Secretariat, Lower Albert Road,

Hong Kong.
