1. Mr Luce is grateful for the various advice he has received on whether he should talk to Lord Shawcross about Hong Kong. He has concluded that, on balance, it is worth doing so: he may be able to help educate the Chinese in the realities of Hong Kong. We are attempting to fix an appointment for early September.

2. Mr Luce would, incidentally, welcome a check-list of others who have a similar degree of influence with China, and who may be able to help indirectly.
