I have been instructed by the Prime Minister to reply to your letter of 2 March setting out your views on Hong Kong's future and to convey her thanks to you for taking the trouble to write to her in this way.
Because of the confidentiality of the talks I regret that it is not possible to meet your request for a briefing on them. But I can assure you that Mer Majesty's Government remain committed to the common aim, agreed with Chinese leaders last September, of maintaining Hong Kong's stability and pros- perity, and to finding a solution to the question of Hong Kong's future which will be acceptable to Britain, to China and to the people of Hong Kong. I can also assure you that the views of the people of Hong Kong, are being carefully taken into account.
Yours sincerely,
