Australia and many different Australian enterprises are putting a special effort and money into the development of relations with China. In addition to regular governmental exchanges, and the cultural, scientific, technological and educational programmes administered by

our Departments of Foreign Affairs, Science, and Education, the Australian Government has set aside additional money

for China. It has a no-strings aid commitment of 100 million Renminbi. It has a line of credit at attractive interest rates. It supports financially special exchange programmes run by our Academy of Science, Academy of Technological Sciences, Academy of Humanities and Academy of Social Sciences. It has set up a special Australia-China Council, which has an annual budget of about one million Renminbi, to develop teaching Chinese language and Chinese studies and to raise public knowledge and awareness of China in Australia, and to act as a seeding machine to support exchanges with China. In addition there are numbers of commercial organisations and individuals who are working to cement our ties.
