PERSONAL FLAG

The personal flag of a Officer Administering the Government (OAG) in a Dependent Territory is the Union flag, superimposed in the centre with the approved arms or badge of the Territory on a white disc surrounded by a green garland. It is flown from sunrise to sunset at Government House when the OAG is in residence: if he is not, the flag is flown wherever he is in the Territory or on board ship. A miniature of the personal flag may be carried on a motor car in which the OAG is travelling.

DEFACED BLUE ENSIGN

The Blue Ensign, defaced with the arms or badge of the Territory in the centre of the part between the Union and the end of the flag, is worn at the stern, with a blue pennant at the masthead, by all armed vessels belonging to or in the service of the government of the Territory. When not armed, such vessels do not fly a pennant.

OAGS have discretion to authorise the use of the defaced Blue Ensign (in Bermuda, the defaced Red Ensign) for decorative purposes inside the Territory and for distinguishing purposes either inside or outside the Territory (eg at Olympic Games). Approval to use the flag should be given only to a person or body representing the Territory and on an occasion when the use of the Union flag would be inappropriate or likely to cause confusion. The approval should limit the use of the flag to the time and place of the event.

7.4

RED ENSIGN

All vessels registered as belonging to Her Majesty's subjects in Dependent Territories fly the Red Ensign without any badge unless otherwise authorised by Warrant from Her Majesty or from the Admiralty. Merchant vessels of the UK Dependent Territories may carry distinguishing flags with the badge of the Territory, in addition to the Red Ensign, provided that such flags do not infringe section 73(2) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894.
