1. Mr Hartland-Swan, the Head of Chancery in Brussels rang to say that M Alfred Cahen, the Belgian Political Director, had asked his help in connection with a young relative of his, Miss Karyn Claes, who is doing a doctorate thesis on Hong Kong's future. She is coming to London from 5 - 15 April and would very much like to speak to somebody in the Office in order to get some background. She would also be grateful if we could advise her about possible academic contacts.

2. I said we would help. Mr Cahen is somebody we want to keep in with. Would Mr Morris please see Miss Claes, who will get in touch with us. Would he also please consider, with FED and Research Department, possible academic contacts whom she might approach, eg in the School of Oriental Studies.

3. I said we would ring Mr Hartland-Swan back to confirm the arrangements and to offer suggestions.
