As I mentioned on the telephone, when I enquired last Thursday (20 January) Roderick MacFarquhar had still not received acceptance from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for his proposed period of research there. But he has not been refused and according to Basil Clarke of the BBC hopes to receive acceptance quite soon.

2. You may wish to be aware of the following probable visitors to China.

a.

Sir Peter Matthews, Chairman of Vickers, who is to succeed Lord Nelson shortly as President of the Sino-British Trade Council, is expected to make an introductory visit, X but probably not until 1984.

b.

Senior representatives of BP are likely to be visiting China in connection with current offshore oil projects. I am unlikely to receive details of such a visit in advance, but there may be colleagues in the office who have contacts with BP and could ask to be forewarned, if necessary.
