Professor Lin hoped that there was some way of conveying this message to Mrs. Thatcher since, if she accepted to do this, it would greatly add to her prestige and to her name going down in history as a great statesman.
The present impasse, and the lack of information as to the progress of negotiations, was causing grave anxiety - particularly to the younger generation of the Chinese business community, and it was not in Hong Kong's interests to allow this state of affairs to continue.
LK said he would be happy to assist in any way possible but was anxious not to take any action which could be misinterpreted and do more harm than good.

Professor Lin, a Canadian-Chinese, was formerly Director of the Centre for Asian Studies at McGill University. He is presently the President of Linbridge Inc., an association formed to promote a better understanding between China and the West.
Professor Lin organized the initial visit to China of Henry Kissinger, then U.S. Secretary of State.
