Following our telephone conversation today I enclose three copies of our background brief on Hong Kong. I am afraid that we have no details readily available on land prices in the Territory, which as you know tend to fluctuate rapidly. It would in any case be impossible to predict how they will move between now and 1997. The Hong Kong Government will of course be able to give you up-to- date information when you are in Hong Kong.

We have now seen the article in the South China Morning Post of 13 August. We are sure that this was not based on a Government briefing, and that there is no question of the Hong Kong Government attempting to distance themselves from the visit.

We have asked the Hong Kong Government to do what they can to correct any unfavourable or inaccurate impressions that the article may have given.
