1.

Thank you for your letter of 6 July: The Unofficials were indeed most impressed and grateful for the way in which they were received in London. They were struck by the close personal interest which both the Secretary of State and Mr. Luce showed in the affairs of Hong Kong and their understanding of the vital importance to Hong Kong of the question of the future. There is no doubt that the visit was a great success and we are all most grateful for all the arrangements made for it.

We are now looking forward to seeing Mr. Luce here at the end of September. We well understand how heavy the Secretary of State's programme is. We have not been seeking a commitment to the autumn, only the holding of a possible gap in case of need, but we will in any event welcome him next spring. The Unofficials were as I say both pleased at his interest and impressed at the speed with which he had come to grips with the subject.

The Unofficials were also pleased at the interest which you showed and encouraged by your attendance at the meetings. You would indeed be very welcome if you could fit in a visit here. November would be a good time if

Sir Antony Acland, KCMG, KCVO, Permanent Under-Secretary of State,

FCO.
