our attention to a volume of memoirs by the (now retired) Ambassador responsible for negotiating the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal. The work is "Esperancas de Abril" by Antonio Coimbra Martins

(published by Perspectivas and Realidades, (?) Lisbon, 1981). There is apparently also a French translation.

summary of the chapters in the book most relevant to Macau (page 433 onwards). This suggests that it might be worth your having a look at the book to see what light it throws on the nature of the understandings reached between the Chinese and the Portuguese over Macau during the negotiations leading up to the establishment of diplomatic relations. We should be grateful in due course for any comments you (and the Embassy in Lisbon) may have.
