These then are the tasks that I see ahead for the coming year; to maintain the confidence of the business community and the competitiveness of the Hong Kong economy; to continue to manage its affairs in a manner which stand scrutiny by an increasingly articulate population and to continue to increase their participation in the processes of government and first and foremost to negotiate on their behalf, and in consultation with them, an agreement with China which will preserve their identity and lifestyle and give them confidence to the future. It promises to be a busy year.
