PUS'S MEETING WITH MR EVELYN DE ROTHSCHILD

1.

You told me that the PUS would be seeing Mr de Rothschild on 16 November, and asked if we knew if the future of Hong Kong had been raised with him during his recent visit to China.

2.

We have consulted Peking and the Governor of Hong Kong on this. The Chinese gave Mr de Rothschild VIP treatment in China, even though his visit took place during a national holiday. He met Vice-Premier Tian Jiyun and the Chairman of the Bank of China, Bu Ming. However, neither the Embassy nor the Chief Secretary in Hong Kong, who gave Mr de Rothschild lunch when he passed through the territory on his return from China, received any indication that the question of the future had been raised with him. Their impression is that the Chinese concentrated mainly on discussing China's economic development, interest rates and other international banking matters.
