ST HELENA (AND DEPENDENCIES TRISTAN DA CUNHA AND ASCENSION
ISLAND)
1.
No sign of any wish to become independent (Ascension has
no indigenous population). In view of the economic situation,
independence is not at present a feasible proposition.
The Governor of St Helena has full powers and is advised
by Legislative and Executive Councils.
2.
3.
The Administrators of Tristan da Cunha and Ascension are
responsible to the Governor of St Helena.
4.
St Helena is dependent upon grant-in-aid from Britain.
The island has few natural resources and exports are minimal.
There seems no prospect that this situation will change in time.
Aid funds are also made available to subsidise the operation of a cargo/passenger shipping service to the islands of St Helena
and Ascension.
5.
Tristan da Cunha (population 300) has a flourishing
crayfish industry which obviates the need for budgetary aid.
Assistance is given, however, in the provision of technical
experts in such fields as education, medicine, etc.
