Subject to certain exceptions the EEC Treaty applies to

Gibraltar. (See Article 227(4) of the Treaty and Article 28 of

the Act of Accession.) Section 5 of the British Nationality Act

1981 enables Gibraltarians who are to be treated as nationals of

the UK for Community purposes to be registered as British

citizens. Since the Act commenced on 1 January 1983 about 4,000

(out of approximately 15,000 entitled persons) have applied.
