Present Anguilla Government does not contemplate independence in this decade.

No further constitutional advance of significance
possible in the interim.

Need to help build up a viable economy. With no natural resources, this must be based on tourism. Aid will be needed for some years yet to build up both economic and social
infrastructure.

Formerly part of the Associated State of St Kitts-Nevis-
Anguilla, Anguilla was finally and formally separated from the
State in December 1980 and assumed Dependent Territory status.
It was given a revised constitution in April 1982 which provided
for normal Ministerial type government, with the Governor
retaining only certain limited powers relating to defence,
internal affairs, police (including internal security) and the
Public Service.

A number of tourist developments are now nearing completion, and the first should soon be in business. It is
expected that the territory will cease to require budgetary aid
by the end of 1983.
