IMMIGRATION AND PASSIONI
(AMENDMENT) ORDINACE 1932
LEGAL REPORT
The main object of the Bill is to amend the Immigration and Passport Act (Cap.137) to take account of the provisions of the British Nationality Act, 1981, of the United Kingdom, which will come into force on January 1st, 1983. Accordingly, clause 2 provides for a new definition of a person who is deemed to belong to the Colony. The definition is in terms designed to ensure that any person who is at present a belonger will continue to have that status when
this Ordinance takes effect.
2. The opportunity has been taken at the same time to make a number of small alterations in the existing law to remedy matters of a drafting nature and to
remove certain ambiguities. Certain penaltics will be increased to allow for inflation. There are also a number of consequential amendments in other laws,
set out in a Schedule to the Bill.
3. The Bill was introduced and received a first reading in the Legislative
Council on December 13th 1982. It received a second and third reading on
December 23rd 1982 when it was passed with amendments in clause 2 and the
Schedule.
4. In my opinion His Excellency the Governor may properly assent to the
Bill in the name and on behalf of Her Majesty.
