HONG KONG

The island of Hong Kong was ceded in perpetuity to the UK by the Treaty of Nanking of 1842. The southern part of Kowloon Feninsula was similarly ceded by the Convention of Peking of 1860, and a larger territory in the north, now known as the New Territories, was leased to the UK for 99 years by the Second Convention of Peking of 1898. The territory is administered as part of Her Majesty's Dominions under the Hong Kong Letters Patent 1917-1976 and the Hong Kong Royal Instructions 1917-1977.

Hong Kong has Executive and Legislative Councils, comprising appointed members only, which advise the Governor.
