THE FUTURE OF HONG KONG

During her visit to Peking in September 1982, the Prime Minister agreed with Chinese leaders to enter discussions through diplomatic channels on the future of Hong Kong with the common aim of maintaining the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. Meetings have begun in Peking and are continuing.

The two Governments have made their positions on

sovereignty clear. Given the common aim, we are confident that satisfactory arrangements can be worked out which are acceptable to Britain, China and the people of Hong Kong.

There is no timetable for the talks. The Governor of

Hong Kong has been consulted throughout, and will participate in them as and when necessary.

THE HONG KONG ECONOMY

4.

Like everyone else, Hong Kong has suffered from the world

recession. It nevertheless recorded a 2.4% growth level in the Gross Domestic Product in 1982-3 and has forecast a 4% growth

level for 1983-4.

VIETNAMESE REFUGEES

5.

Sympathise with the refugee burden faced by Hong Kong. HMG anxious to do what we can through UNHCR and by persuading other countries to take refugees.

This would require careful consideration. It would for

example require the cooperation of the Vietnamese authorities and international organisations.
