After leaving school in 1976, the prisoner took up apprenticeship in printing and had worked for four printing factories. The latest one was Kin Yip Printing Company where he had worked from October 1978 till the present Murder offence. He was well commented on his work performance and was regarded to be a conscientious, competent and reliable worker. Eventually he became the in-charge of the factory production line and was paid with $2200 a month, excluding over-time allowance, which was the highest for a technician in this field. He even had the plan to start his own printing company with his friends as partners when they had enough capital. His career appeared prospective if he had not committed the present offence.

The family financial situation also improved after the children started to work. The prisoner who contributed about half of his salary to the family was said to be most helpful. In order to have greater privacy and better living environment the family rented the present abode in August 1978.

Despite years of separation, the family members used to maintain an affectionate and harmonious relationship. The mother was very concerned about her children who in return showed piety to her. However, the family did not know much about the prisoner, particularly his associates and outside activities in the recent years.

After leaving school, the prisoner seldom contacted his former 'schoolmates. Though he was active in sports and sociable he kept a rather superficial relationship with most of his friends. He had only two close friends namely Mr YEUNG Kwok-wah and Mr TSANG Hung-kei. They were also printing-workers.

About three years ago, the prisoner knew Miss WONG Ching-man. They were so close that they had once thought of getting married, despite the objection of the girl's family.

In April 80,. Miss WONG Ching-man joined the United Overseas Bank. There she made friends with the deceased, fell in love and eventually engaged with him. He was shocked by their engagement which was made known to him on 15.9.80. He was upset and tormented and wanted to commit suicide. He had prepared two wills, one for his mother and one for his girlfriend.

On 20.9.80 morning, he invited his girlfriend to his home to read his will. The latter was accompanied to his home by the deceased. At a heated dispute the prisoner committed the present offence. After the incident the prisoner was very confused. He went up to the roof-top of the building with suicidal intent. It took hours for the police and his family to persuade him to come down.

On 28.7.81, the prisoner was sentenced to death for the present Murder case.
He had no record of conviction before. The prisoner had applied for appeal of his case but the date for hearing was not yet fixed. (Appeal Case No. AGC 747 and CA No. 687).
