for more than eight hours.

Background

On the evening of 20th July, 1980, Mrs. WONG Cho-ying, aged

77, and her grandson TONG King-wood returned to their flat at 42N Pak Tai Street, Kowloon. The young man Tong, aged 19, went ahead of her

to open the flat door.

The flat, which was divided into 4 cubicles, with a

corridor, a common sitting area and a lavatory and kitchen, had a total

area of about.400 square feet.

Cubicle No. 1, at one end of the flat was occupied by

and their young child. The next Cubicle (No. 2)

was occupied by the defendant Li. Cubicle No. 3 was occupied by Mr.

Chan and Cubicle No. 4 by Mrs. Wong and one of her sons. The victim

Tong occupied a cockloft situated above the lavatory which was next to

Cubicle No. 4.

The cubicles were divided from one another by wooden

partitions, which stopped well short of the ceiling.
