STATEMENT

DATE:

The refusal of the authorities to grant an extension of

stay to Christine Vertucci, co-director of Asia Monitor Resource Center, has filled us with indignation, anger and dismay. We cannot see any reason that would justify

such a decision.

We know Christine Vertucci as a dedicated and hardworking person with a deep commitment to social justice. She helped organizing the poor and underprivileged of Hongkong to de- fend their rights. Her work at Asia Monitor was an express- ion of her deep concern for the economic and social issues of the region.

We are unable to identify any reason for Government's refusal of an extension of stay. We ask why her Immigration Department classification was changed from AC to CR and would like to know what it implies. We think that the delay of the reply to her application from December 18, 1981 to January 22, 1982 and the short notice of 14 days to wind up her affairs in Hong Kong is very unfair.

We strongly support Christine Vertucci's appeal and urge the authorities to review her case thoroughly.
