Dear Chris,

The message of January 22, 1982, arrived only yesterday, February 5.

The Director of above-mentioned Institute, Basker Vashee, is at the moment in Washington DC, and also other Fellows are not in town. So I took the liberty to send statements to the Governor of Hong Kong and the Chief Secretary on behalf of the Institute. Copies of the statements have been enclosed in this letter.

The case was reported in the Dutch press; exactly yesterday, February 5, it appeared in the influential NRC/Handelsblad, reported by the paper's correspondent for China and Hong Kong, Willem van Kemenade (of course, you know him).

We do hope that our appeals will be successful; you did excellent and revolutionary work in Hong Kong for the poor and destitute.

I was in Australia September-December 1981, but could not make it to come through Hong Kong, although I stayed two weeks in Manila on the return journey to Amsterdam.

Give my warmest regards to Tom Gassert, and others. With warmest regards and best wishes,

in solidarity !

yours
