The following are the most important basic documents of general application to the affairs of all DTs:

Colonial Regulations issued by the FCO are directions to OAGs for general guidance given by the Crown through the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. They are administrative instructions only and within each DT are to be read subject to the Constitution and Standing Instructions of that Territory. They nevertheless provide the basic code, particularly as regards staff and financial matters, for dealing with the affairs of all Dependent Territories

"The Merger of the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth Office, 1968" HMSO

List of Senior British Expatriate Officers serving in Dependent Territories produced by DT Administative, Legal and Judicial Staffing Section

"A Year Book of the Commonwealth" (Annual) contains details of Constitutions, Institutions, and other features of the DTs

"Civil Service Pay and Conditions of Service Code" (formerly ESTACODE), issued by Civil Service Department, contains the regulations and instructions for controlling the conduct of Her Majesty's Home Civil Service

"Government Accounting" issued by HM Treasury

"ODM Office Procedure" issued by Ministry of Overseas Development

"A Guide to British Supplementation Schemes" issued by Ministry of Overseas Development

Notes on Procedure etc for OAGs of Dependent Territories.

The following include some of the reference works which may need to be consulted regarding individual DTs:

Constitutional Instruments, ie the Constitution Order in Council, Royal Instructions, Letters Patent, etc

The latest revised edition of the laws of the Territory, including subsidiary legislation, since the date of the last revised edition
