Sir Murray MacLehose Governor

Government House

Tiong Kong

Dear Governor MacLehose:

As a former resident of the colony, currently teaching at Nanjing University in China, I was shocked to learn that my good friend and former colleague, Ms Christine Vertucci of the Asia Monitor Resource Centre, has been refused an extension of her working permit, and is required to quit the colony in a fortnight.

There are many things I could say on Hs Vertucci's behalf. She is a quaili- fied and respected member of the American legal community. She renders a valuable community service through the publication of Asia Monitor. She is dedicated to working for a better lot on behalf of the common man. But as a United Presbyterian missionary-fraternal worker, I would especially want to commend to you her deep Christian faith and outstanding character. It is for this reason above all, that I am both perplexed and dismayed by the government's decision to ask her to leave.

I would most appreciate any insight or information you could proffer on the government's decision. I realize that you are a busy man, but should you like, I could also make myself available over the next few days to dis- cuss the matter with you.

Thank you for your consideration. I am,

Sincerely yours,

Philip L. Wickeri
